Professor Messer's Free CompTIA A+ Training Course

Chapter 4: Processors and CPUs

The CPU is the center of the personal computer universe, and these videos will help you understand everything you’ll need to pass the CompTIA A+ exams.

Introduction to CPUs (13:58)
220-601, Section 1.1

The CPU is the heart and soul of the personal computer, but how does it really work? In this module, we’ll outline the basic structure of the central processing unit, and you’ll learn how the front side bus and system clock work together to enable the raw processing power of the CPU.

CPU Technologies (23:39)
220-601, Section 1.1

Modern technological advancements in CPU manufacturing have resulted in amazing increases in processing speed, but they’ve also introduced more complex computing architectures. In this module, we’ll discuss advanced features and technologies that have been integrated into today’s most popular CPUs.

CPU Sockets (7:06)
220-601, Section 1.1

The configurations of CPUs onto a motherboard consist of a diverse set of slots, sockets, and connections. In this video, we’ll highlight some of these sockets types and show how a pin grid array processor fits into the zero insertion force sockets of today’s motherboards.

A History of CPUs (19:31)
220-601, Section 1.1

The history of the modern CPU is a mix of technical prognostication, very smart people, and a drive to expand on our vision of the future. In this module, we’ll follow the path of CPU technology from the origin of the Pentium through the latest in processing technologies from Intel and AMD.

Selecting, Installing, and Troubleshooting CPUs (13:33)
220-601, Section 1.3, 220-602, Sections 1.1 and 1.2

A CompTIA A+ professional is required to understand the details behind selecting, installing, and troubleshooting a personal computer CPU. In this module, we’ll discuss the decision making process for CPU selection, CPU installation techniques, and some tips and tricks for troubleshooting potential CPU problems.

  1. Hi professor, I have two quick questions for you.

I had built my computer 5 years ago, and I had the most unheard-of parts at the time…but now they aren’t so good.
I decided I needed to upgrade my computer again, so I wanted to ask if the processor’s performance would be effected by the FSB in any way.

Also, I couldn’t recall if the BIOS on a new boxed motherboard came pre-configured or not. Is this the case?

    Thanks in advance,
    Aneeq

  2. hi, the fsb is the processors connection with memory and the rest of the system so yes its speed is an important factor when selecting a motherboard. As for your second question, the BIOS is generally ready to go on modern motherboards so you generally wont need to touch anything unless you have problems. hope this helps.
