I was reading the thread "Observation About RIMM" and followed your links to Wikipedia. Some interesting reading I must say, but I got sidetracked for a bit. Would it be possible for you to place a default setting in your forum to open external links into a separate target window. When I was ready to return to the forum, I needed to back my browser several times. I guess I had wandered farther than I realized.

Just a thought,
Bill

This is a completely reasonable request, especially when a link to another site is included in a message or anywhere on the web site. However, there has been an ongoing discussion on the Internet (for years!) regarding what would be normal, default, or expected operation of a browser. The general consensus is that the default link should open a page in the same window. Some folks think that the browser should NEVER open a link in a new tab or window, regardless of the HTML coding underneath!

I'm planning a move to a different forum and web site software base, so this may change soon. Thanks for the idea, I'll keep it in mind!

I'm not sure I agree. At least if you open external links in a separate window, the viewer still has an open portal back to your site. For a new visitor, this will sometimes provide a second look that many surfers just never seem to get around to.

I'm sure everyone will have their own preferences. Many of the sites I visit open local pages in one window and use a second for external sites. Seems to work pretty well. Something for thought.

Great site,
Bill
