People ask how much detail do they really need to know. Trouble is ... you won't really know what to memorize until you've taken the exam. Sorry, but that's the reality to be faced.

I found the exams to be comprehensive, not needing a lot of depth. For example, it more likely covered recent technology than legacy technology. I recall there being a question about troubleshooting SCSI and a floppy drive -- yet the lion's share of both exams delt with contemporary stuff. I didn't need the IRQs, processor and slot types, and similar knowledge that I slaved over in the weeks preceeding the exams. My exams emphasized printers (the hardware, drivers, and managing the printer queue), power supplies, and Vista and Windows 7 questions.

The 701 exam requires you to have a good memory. By reading this blog for some time -- mostly as a lurker -- I've noticed there is a tendency to overly emphasize hardware to the detriment of networking and the Windows operating systems. You need knowledge of all of these areas to pass the exam. Take the CompTIA A+ sample test and find your weakest areas. Then work on those until you are sick of the material.

The 702 exam requires a bit more comprehension and understanding That is, you'll need more than rote memory to answer the questions correctly. You'll need to demonstrate 701 knowledge and apply some critical thinking to resolve the problems posed in the exam. By the way, there may be one or more good answers, but only one best answer given the information provided.

Good luck to you.

Some things will come up over and over in IT; they should be commited to memory (at least the most frequent ones).

OSI model
TCP/IP (port numbers = protocols = Port usage) i.e 80, http, web access
connectors
RAID configurations
IPv4 and IPv6 terminology
DNS and older tech (host, Lmhost, static, dynamic, ad enabled, secondary, primary)
cable types (copper, Optical,) including when and where they are best used.

These things will will likely be around for at least the next 20 years. In other words, anything which is tabular in nature and may require you consult a manual for values, is a candidate for memorization.

In grade school, most of us learned ABC's, multiplication tables up to the 12's. The never change and we have need to use them constantly in our daily lives. Things you need to memorize are based on the same criteria: if you find that you frequently need to refer to a table for values, settings, configuration - then you will save yourself a lot of time - if you invest effort in memorizing that data. As a professional, people will expect you to have formulas, configurations, setting, command line syntax ... without haveing to get a manual of consult a calculator for every little issue. These are the tools of your trade. You don't expect a Doctor to read from his medical books during surgery, he should have most of that memorized. Right?
