Quote:
Since the throughput calculations come up with numbers in the millions then have to convert that number from bits to megabytes, its easier to just multiply width by clock speed in MHz then divide that by 8.

Example: 16bit bus X 7MHz clock = 112 /8 = 14 MB per second

I Just want to make sure this is a legit way to calculate the throughtput. I'm taking notes for my A+ course. Thanks for the help!

Yes that sounds right to me, handy formula.

The only thing you have to be aware of is that sometimes in the technology industry rounding off (usually rounding up) occurs for the sake or marketing, for example...

A standard 32-bit wide PCI slot/bus uses a 33 Mhz clock, yet is marketed as running at 133 MBps.

32 x 33 = 1056
1056/8 = 132 (this gives us 132 megabytes a second).

Also a standard PCI slot/bus which is 64-bits wide is marketed as 266 MBps.
Again...

64 x 33 = 2112
2112/8 = 264 megabytes per second... right?

The formula is a good guide, but don't get tripped up in the exam if you get a speed that doesn't match the formula of clock speed x data width, the same holds true with working out PC ratings for RAM modules, check the videos for more on those formulas.

Good Luck!
