Post Networking protocol different OS'S
GSNW, CSNW, AFP, NWLINK, TCP/IP, SMB, NFS, NETBEUI.

I have taken several tests and have been baffled when question come up to do with this. e.g You want MAC computers to communicate with windows servers, what protocol do you install on the windows server for this and what on the client. Some other examples would be linking windows clients to netware servers and there are loads more.

This is an issue which I personally think couldn't be more important. Does anybody know of a website/book where I can obtain this information even if it's not required by the network+ course.
Thanks in advance,
Cian

I'm not studying for the the Network+ exam, but I agree I think that that question is very important and real-life applicable one, right-on.

My guess is that the answer is TCP/IP, as that is the protocol used on the Internet and therefore would likely be a common denominator between MACs and Windows machines.

NWLINK and NETBEUI are both Microsoft proprietary network protocols, I doubt that MACs even support those protocols, but anything is possible with software I guess!

Try googling protocols to find out about them!

Hi there,

You have 4 Main Protocol Suites:

1) TCP/IP
2) IPX/SPX
3) NetBEUI
4) AppleTalk

In the present day the protocol Suite TCP/IP is the most widely implemented, the others it is still used, but on a smaller scale.

Anyway the TCP/IP function in the followed architectures:

1) Ethernet
2) Token Ring
3) FDDI (Fiber cooper)
4) Wireless

For my experience, You can have a Windows Server 2000/2003/2008 With the Protocol TCP/IP installed in the NIC in on one side, and Windows Clients, Linux Clients, and MAC clients (ipod, ipad, iphone, etc...) and YES, you can establish connection with the server, OK

I make this test, and this is true, you can!!

Best Regards,

P.S. I liked that the staff become more involved, Thanks
