 Acer Aspire
Hi all,
I am seeking some advice when buying a new laptop. I am looking for budget and have, after checking out a lot of reviews decided on the Acer Aspire 5750g however the question I have is that though the specs are great 8GB of Ram and 750 GB of storage it is only powered by the i3/2310, will this be a problem?
The alternative is 5742 with 6GB of Ram and the i5/410.
Should I sacrifice power for more ram?
I am in my first year of university and studying IT and will need to download developer tools however I do no gaming whatsoever. So its basically going to be office and Visual Studio and SQL server and some photo editing(maybe some video editing). Any advice appreciated, Thanks...Mark

 Re: Acer Aspire
When it comes to Laptops; ram is cheap - without much effort, a deft hand with a screw driver, an anti-static wrist strap and correct safety procedure - you can easily upgrade the memory in less than 30 minutes to an hour. Processors?... not so much. Because of the confined spaces and propritary nature of M/B's, power supplies, etc - changing processor chips is usually considered outside the scope of most consumer types.
Go for the chip performance, if all things are otherwise even (get the i7 processor - upgrade the memory if you find that you need it).
Note: If you don't drop it or it doesn't get stolen (or peer pressure from richer friends) don't cause premature purchase - a laptop should be "current". more or less for 3 - to - 5 years. You could look for an gen II - i5 processor and stay in the middle??

 Re: Acer Aspire
Hi Zenner,
Cheers appreciate the sound advice. I have had my LG E300 for 4 years with 3GB of ram 120HDD and Core Duo, it was great to start with and I think in theory 3GB should be enough and I have only used around 65GB of storage but it just seems to struggle so much and I housekeep the laptop once a week.
I need VB studio on my laptop and a SQL database and also will run a virtual machine(for uni studies) and I have installed studio and unistalled( computer performance dropped big time). so I guess it is the time to upgrade.
Definitely looking at genII i5 with 6GB of Ram.
Once again thanks for the reply.
