In support of my fresh studies, my family has handed over all their old laptops to me. I now have 3 laptops (1 Win7 & 2 WinXP) that I can play around with.
Do you have suggestions on projects that are the most effective in teaching core concepts of A+? Examples of what I'm envisioning are: - Uninstalling & reinstalling Windows OS. - Networking all computers together - Installing Linux and dual-booting - Adding ram & various cards to my desktop expansion slots Would installing Linux be helpful? Or a time-waster since Windows is so critical in A+? What projects would you suggest I start with? Thanks everyone! |

This is the relevance of each section of the exams
701 1.0 Hardware 27% 2.0 Troubleshooting, Repair & Maintenance 20% 3.0 Operating System and Software 20% 4.0 Networking 15% 5.0 Security 8% 6.0 Operational Procedure 10% Total 100% 702 1.0 Hardware 38% 2.0 Operating Systems 34% 3.0 Networking 15% 4.0 Security 13% Total 100% I would say any activity that will instill hardware and operating systems knowledge will be most helpful. I haven't seen much mention of Linux, So I am concentrating on Windows. Networking is my favorite activity, but it doesn't weigh quite as heavily on the A+. I think they save a lot of that for Network+. 15% is a good piece of the action, but it looks like hardware and OS are the biggies. |

The only advice I can suggest is if you're going to dual-boot Windows7 with Linux (Ubuntu, etc), always install windows FIRST then use wubi.exe to do the linux install or install from the live cd, because the boot mgr doesn't play nice with Ubuntu also installed, you may have to even replace it with Grub2 so both partitions are readable. Give that a shot, definitely a great observation, something I didn't do during my A+ run but something I've had to do later on in the "field". Learning Unix is also ESSENTIAL. Most networks do not use "windows" or even GUI,so that again I can't stress enough, add it if you really wanna be a tech. Installing expansion cards is fun, easy stuff.. do it for personal knowledge but to be honest, I wouldn't waste too much time on that. Want real training, got some great suggestions for you! Can you take apart a laptop and put it back together? If someone dropped a laptop (lots of people do this) and it had an issue, could you go into the hardware and attempt a fix? -learn to... remove and reinstall a laptop keyboard how to take apart an internal wireless card and reinstall it from inside a laptop (if applicable) how to ID a service tag if a store like best buy has worked on it how to check an inverter, or at least how to install/lookup a part # how to clean a laptop internally how to install drivers from a new system you don't have how to remove and reconfigure USB ports (if applicable) on a laptop. how to fix and replace keyboard keys/touchpad Yes, that is kinda outside the scope of what A+ is asking for, but I'm in the IT field FOR REAL, and these are the challenges you will face in the real world. If you can,get a copy of Windows Server 2008 and install that also. See how that install goes, you get 60 days free to try it. Try that as a bonus install, since some folks do actually use this. The professor makes a great suggestion about VMware, I would say try that also and use it if you'd like. Don't worry about Windows 2000, that is such an obsolete OS nowadays, it's kinda worthless to even continue a study towards. Other then that, definitely try the other things you've mentioned, like proper RAM installation, etc. The A+ test is great knowledge if you study right, you can keep forever. But the real life applications, that is such a huge undertaking, i would say try those things first, cuz the first laptop you take apart and work on can be the scariest.. I had to work on my bosses laptop here at work, with some trinket screwdriver no ESD strap Kent C. _________________ ![]()
