 New to IT
I am new to IT and I am starting to study for the a+. Looking for any recommendations on study materials. I have the Mike Meyers all in one guide. Is there any other books I should look into and or lab practice books? Any tips would be gratefully appreciated

 Re: New to IT
Welcome to the forum! If you are new to IT and not familiar with computer architecture and doing a few upgrades etc then I would suggest doing some or even all of the following:
watch all of the Professor's videos try to get hold of a cheap PC to play around with and get familiar. You can even install another operating system using something like oracle VirtualBox. In the Professor's A+ vids there's a vid which tells you more. It isn't a necessity but it could help you try stuff. Get hold of a copy of the CBT nuggets A+ video training. It is excellent and to be honest a person can use this without any book and pass. Last but not least do as many practice questions as possible.Very important as you must get familiar with the question style. Check out CompTIA website for a sample of about 30 questions. The Mike Meyers questions on his website are excellent and very close to the real thing (probably a bit harder than real thing) albeit they are expensive. I think there's other companies out there called Transcender but I don't know if they are good. You can also use the website Proprofs for learning as there maybe A+ questions on there. If not you can also use that site to create your own questions/answers and flashcards. It is free to use but requires sign up. I ended up using proprofs for some of my exams as I originally was writing stuff on small index cards but these got so many so decided to try the paperless method.
Having one book and at least two of the above things should help you.

 Re: New to IT
I passed the A+ two exams using three resources: 1) Professor Messers videos, daily questions, and monthly topic reviews; 2) the CompTIA A+ Cert Guide (2nd edition); and Meyer's Guide to Supporting Windows 7 for CompTIA A+ Certification. I've heard good things about Meyer's other books, but just happened to buy the CompTIA book because it was the most recently revised. Same with the CBT nuggets videos.
My local library has a subscription to Safari Online Books, so I can read recently published A+ books from my home PC for free. You might ask your local library if they too provide access to Safari.
Remember that the A+ exam tests you on hardware, networks, and 3 most recent Microsoft operating systems. If you learn best by doing, get a used PC with the Windows 7 (or Vista) operating system, and then install an old copy of XP in a dual-boot partition. You can get an XP license real cheap through EBay. I suggested the Win7-to-XP route because Win7 needs a lot more in the way of hardware than XP. Make sure you have a Win7-ready PC ... that's all.
