ATA 3.14159265

Which of these devices are most commonly associated with ATAPI?

A) CD-ROMs

B) PATA hard drives

C) Floppy drives

D) SATA hard drives

E) Pie? I love pie!

The answer: A) CD-ROMs

ATAPI was created as an extension of the ATA standard. The ATA Packet Interface allowed manufacturers to use the ATA connections in a computer, but send SCSI commands over the wire. This allowed the use of traditional SCSI devices in the newer ATA-based motherboards. Devices that would traditionally connect via SCSI, such as CD-ROMs, could instead connect directly to the ATA bus while still maintaining full functionality.
