Ethernet, standardized as IEEE 802.3, is a family of frame-based networking technologies for LANs (Local Area Network). Ethernet describes the physical cabling attributes, signaling, and bandwidth characteristics.

Ethernet includes:

10Base5

  • Uses thick coax cable
  • Up to 10 Mbps transfer
  • Up to 500 meters cable length

10Base2

  • Uses thin coax cable
  • Up to 10 Mbps transfer
  • Up to 185 meters cable length

10BaseT

  • Uses Cat 3/5 twisted-pair cable
  • Up to 10 Mbps transfer
  • Up to 100 meters cable length

100BaseTX

  • Uses Cat 5 twisted-pair cable
  • Up to 100 Mbps transfer
  • Up to 100 meters cable length

1000BaseT

  • Uses Cat 5e/6 twisted-pair cable
  • Up to 1 Gbps transfer
  • Up to 100 meters cable length
