In which of these cases would you use thermal grease?

A) To increase the efficiency of hard drive rotations

B) To modify the fan RPMs

C) To create a connection between a processor and a heat sink

D) To minimize vibration caused by the cooling fans

E) For the ball bearings. It’s all ball bearings these days.

The answer: C) To create a connection between a processor and a heat sink

Thermal grease or thermal compound is used to create an efficient thermal connection between a component and a heat sink. If you’re installing a heat sink, the connection to the hot component must be as thermally efficient as possible.
