How’s your disk?

Your laptop has begun to exhibit delays when loading certain programs and 30-second periods where the operating system is unresponsive. You suspect that the hard drive is having problems, so you’d like to check the drive for any physical issues. What utility will allow you to check the physical health of the drive?

A) defrag

B) chkdsk

C) xcopy

D) format

E) If you shake the laptop really hard, you’ll be able to hear anything that might be loose inside

The answer: B) chkdsk

The chkdsk utility not only checks for logical file issues, but it also can examine each physical sector of the drive for any problems reading or writing to the disk.
