I like to move it, move it

You are upgrading a user from Windows XP x86 directly to Windows 7 x64. What utility provides an automated way to move the user’s profile from one operating system to the other?

A) The Windows upgrade process

B) User State Migration Tool

C) Windows Backup and Restore

D) Windows Upgrade Advisor

E) Use one of those big pod storage things

The answer: B) User State Migration Tool

The User State Migration Tool (USMT) is a command-line tool that handles user profile migrations with a minimum of effort. Unlike the Windows Backup and Restore, the USMT is designed for hands-off automation without requiring the administrator to manually choose the files to be migrated. Windows can’t be upgraded directly from Windows XP to Windows 7 or from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version, so USMT is one of the few options available.
