MAC the butter knife

What is a disadvantage of using MAC filtering as a security feature on your wireless access point?

A) Filtering limits total throughput of the access point

B) MAC addresses can be spoofed

C) MAC addresses aren’t specific enough to provide sufficient filtering

D) Many applications will not work properly through a filtered access point

E) The filtering feature makes everything look blue, with little polka dots.

The answer: B) MAC addresses can be spoofed

Limiting access to an access point by white-listing MAC addresses can create a layer of security, but it’s not enough to keep a crafty hacker from spoofing your MAC address when you aren’t using it.
