Patch and Hang

You’ve just updated the operating system and a number of security patches on your Windows XP workstations, and now the computer hangs before the login prompt. Which of these would be the best next step for resolving this issue?

A) Reload Windows XP from the original installation media

B) Perform a System Restore from an earlier restore point

C) Restore the system form the last full backup

D) Modify the boot.ini file to boot from the backup partition

E) When the system boots, don’t look directly at the screen. It can smell fear.

The answer: B) Perform a System Restore from an earlier restore point

Windows XP will create a restore point when updates and applications are installed. If a problem occurs, reverting to the last restore point will often get you running again.
