This wasn’t in the budget

Which of these cables would be the best choice for a 500 meter Ethernet link between campus buildings?

A) Single-mode fiber

B) STP

C) Multi-mode fiber

D) UTP

E) Just hand me a roll of tin foil and some barbed wire

The answer: C) Multi-mode fiber

Multi-mode fiber is often seen on Ethernet connections under 2 kilometers, and STP/UDP is generally limited to 100 meters. Although a single-mode connection would support much longer distances, the cost is relatively more expensive.
