None of the ports of your data center’s patch panel are labeled. Which one of these would be the best choice for locating the cable that’s connected to a workstation on the other side of the building?

A) Multimeter

B) Cable tester

C) Toner probe

D) Loopback plug

E) Have someone pull really hard on one end of the wire

The answer: C) Toner probe

A toner probe connects to one end of a cable and sends a tone that can then be received by the inductive probe. In this situation, you would connect the tone generator on the workstation side and use the probe to find the associated wire in the data center.
