Next to the BIOS you’ll see some expansion slots. The expansion slots are designed very much like their name sounds; they expand the capabilities of the system. If you wanted to add a high powered video card or you wanted to add additional USB ports into this system, you could buy an expansion card that would attach right onto the motherboard, and you would then have that additional capability.
On this motherboard, there are some expansion cards facing up, and there are also some expansion cards that are facing away from us at a different angle. We’ll talk more about riser cards and their purpose in these types of systems in a later module, but it’s nice to have this example so you can see the differences in expansion slot types, the sizes, and how they sit inside of your system.
