Why doesn’t it work?

Your computer’s hard drive failed, so you purchased a new hard drive and installed it. When you start the computer, you see the message “Operating System not Found.” Which of these orders of steps should you use to get your system back up and running?

A) format the drive, create a partition, install the operating system, restore files from backup

B) install the operating system, create a partition, format the drive, restore files from backup

C) restore files from backup, create a partition, format the drive, install the operating system

D) create a partition, format the drive, install the operating system, restore files from backup

E) Can’t I just bang on it with a hammer or something?

The answer: D) create a partition, format the drive, install the operating system, restore files from backup

Before anything can be written to a drive, you must have a partition, and then the partition must be formatted with a file system. At that point, the operating system can be installed and any data files can be copied from a backup.
